Solving short lead-time jobs in a pinch

Engraved logo on steel[November 9th, 2011] It is definately an advantage to have a goto Longmont machine shop when it counts. Just the other day, we had a walk-in customer needing to get a podium made for a museum and delivered before Friday's grand opening - it was a Tuesday afternoon. The customer was initially looking for the etching of a logo on steel. Very little time was left to get the job done and the customer informed us that no one wanted to do the job locally. So the customer decided to have the logo engraved. Only it was the opposite - raised letters with a pocket cut around the letters. In Boulder and Longmont, no machine shop would do it for at least a couple of weeks, until Advanced Precision Machining was mentioned to him. The customer was also on a fixed budget and we had to be "creative" in quoting this job. The project also contained some "risks" in that the customer supplied material, polished. However, I could see in his eyes that he was officially "in a jam." Although, we had plenty of other work - I was sort of in between set-ups and we really wanted to help him out. We struck a deal and I ended up working all day Tuesday until late at night in oder to meet his deadline. It was worth it. Not so much on the monetary side, but we were able to assist a customer with a schedule problem. We not only gained the trust of a a new customer, we also completed a tricky job that will be on public display at a museum. I'd call it a job well done and I'm happy we were able to help out!
